January 25th, 2026: Abortion and the Image of God

Why Defending Life Is a Christian Responsibility

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Church speaks clearly about the sanctity of life because life comes directly from God. This is not a political talking point. It is a theological truth. From the beginning, God created humanity in His image and likeness. To attack life is to attack that image.

Every year, the March for Life gathers people from many backgrounds to speak against abortion. It is a powerful witness, but it is not enough on its own. Protests do not change hearts by themselves. What truly changes hearts is repentance, love, and action rooted in faith.

Abortion is the great evil of our time because it directly rejects God as Creator. God creates out of love. He calls us to share in that love by welcoming life and caring for others. When abortion is chosen or defended, it is a statement that life is disposable and that God’s image has no value.

This is why the Church speaks so strongly. This is not about convenience or circumstance. Life has never been convenient. Love has never been easy. Christianity has never promised comfort. It promises the Cross, and through the Cross, resurrection.

Many excuses are offered to justify abortion. Financial pressure. Fear. Hard circumstances. These struggles are real, but they do not justify killing. We are very good at making excuses for ourselves. We make excuses not to pray. We make excuses not to come to church. In the same way, society makes excuses for abortion by placing comfort above life.

Life Is a Gift That Calls for Sacrifice

The Fathers of the Church speak beautifully about childbirth. They teach that when a woman gives birth, she comes closer to God than at any other moment in her life because she participates directly in the act of creation. This is a holy moment. To destroy that life is not only violence against a child, but a rejection of communion with God Himself.

Abortion is unique among sins because it is a direct offense against the Creator. It says to God, “I do not want your image. I do not want your gift. I choose myself instead.” This is why the Church cannot be silent.

At the same time, the Church does not respond with hatred. She responds with repentance and love. We pray not only for the children who are lost, but for the women, the men, and even the doctors involved. We pray for healing, forgiveness, and repentance because Christ desires that none should perish.

Being pro life means more than marching or posting online. It means action. It means helping mothers in crisis. It means donating diapers. It means supporting pregnancy centers. It means offering to help raise a child if needed. It means sacrifice.

The early Church changed the world not by power, but by love. Christians rescued abandoned children. They cared for widows and orphans. They lived the Gospel even when it cost them everything.

We are called to do the same. When someone comes to us and says they are considering abortion, the answer must never be indifference. The answer must be love. “How can I help you?” That is the Christian response.

In the end, we will stand before God and answer how we treated life. How we defended the most vulnerable. How we reflected His image in the world. May we be able to say that we defended life with prayer, sacrifice, and love.

Then we will hear the words every Christian longs for. “Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your Lord.” Amen.
